But as a Christian dietitian I have a question:  What’s so bad about craving carbs at times?  What if those cravings are the means by which we eat a healthy diet for energy and prevention of disease?  Complex carbohydrates provide hundreds of vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and fiber.

I find it confusing that everyone is intent on killing hunger rather than learning how to respond to it correctly for optimal health.  Since so many diet book authors are so into evolution (which I am not) and use the theory as the basis for their dietary recommendations, then wouldn’t it follow that we evolved with hunger cues for some not-too-hard-to-figure-out reason?  Personally, I believe those hunger cues are part of our
Creator’s wisdom.  People are much more successful at weight-management when they learn how to respond to hunger correctly rather than trying to kill it.

If you find yourself craving carbs, take it as a signal to feed your body well and reach for fruit, vegees, whole grains, beans, nuts or seeds which all the research shows is the basis of a healthy diet.

Craving Carbs

Welcome to Nutrition Bites
with Registered Dietitian Diane Preves, developer of the 10-week N.E.W. LIFE program,              author of Restoring the Blessing and Diet Book Reviews.
A growing number of popular diet books focus on killing hunger to achieve weight-loss.                The very low-carbohydrate diets are ketosis-inducing diets which result in rapid water loss, quick fat burning, and appetite suppression.  One mega-popular diet book author recommends:
You’d be better off having a small ice cream or even a dark chocolate bar instead of that baked potato.”
because, he writes:
A baked potato in midafternoon practically guarantees that you’ll be starving for carbs by dinner."
