Americans have been told ad nauseam to cut out things from their diet if they want to be healthy--cut the fat, cut the cholesterol, cut the sugar, and if those weren’t enough, recent mega-popular diets would have you eliminate bread, carrots, potatoes, legumes, cabbage, cauliflower, olives, nuts, pasta, grains, corn, papayas, mangoes, coconuts, rhubarb, bananas, and fruit juices too.  Yet from time immemorial focusing on what not to do has been an ineffective way of producing behavior change.  Furthermore, preventing disease is more an issue of what we do eat than what we don’t eat.  Fruits, veggies, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds have 100’s of phytochemicals which support health but prevent disease.  Instead of focusing on what to cut out, ask yourself  am I eating enough fruit? . . . Vegees? . . . Whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds?                   How about fish?  This is, not coincidentally, also the key to successful weight loss and most people are surprised at how quickly their desires change with just small changes.

So just add a fruit or veggie today, or eat a handful of nuts along the way.  What have you got to lose, except maybe some weight?
